Ross Davis has released his new single Five and Dime which is now available on all major streaming platforms. Released as a tribute to the late Nanci Griffith the single is a cover version of her original song ‘love at the five n dime’.
“I recorded “Love at the Five and Dime” back in November 2022, whereby I recorded the individual tracks at home, then mixed and mastered them at a professional recording studio. While I occasionally collaborate with other musicians, this turned out to be a solo project whereby I arranged and performed all of the instruments ranging from vocals, guitar, bass, synthesizer, and drum machine. In doing a cover of the song, I sought to preserve the original lyrics and melody of Nanci’s version of her song, while still adding my own sound to it. For instance, Nanci played acoustic guitar with finger and thumb picks, while I played without them, resulting in a somewhat softer acoustic guitar sound on the recording of the cover. Also, of course I don’t have Nanci’s sparkling soft female voice with a Texas draw; instead, I project a male tenor voice with a Hoosier draw (“Hoosier” being a popular term for someone from the state of Indiana in the USA).” – Ross Davis
Ross Davis has made sure that the cover art for the single still symbolizes both the original song’s thematic elements. This can be seen through the image of the blue rose covered with rain droplets which symbolizes the bittersweet romance of the characters mentioned in the song’s lyrics.
