Where did the inspiration for Say Goodbye come from?
Inspiration came from a music hook that kept spinning around my head each time I walked home. It had a specific lyric for the chorus ‘runaway, runaway, runaway’. I’d procrastinated for some time, but like other ideas that vanish over time – this remained in my head. I knew that I had to write the song and did so one Saturday morning whilst working some overtime. I’d always felt that there could be a story set around ‘Runaway’ and once I’d knuckled down and proved to myself that I could write a song, I set about writing ‘Say Goodbye.’
How did you find the process of making Say Goodbye?
Writing songs and music was difficult on two levels:
Firstly, I’m not a trained musician as such – though I do have a reasonable knowledge about music. Secondly, I’d never really written my own stuff, I was always mixing or remixing other peoples.
Writing the book was also a tough new discipline for me, as I hated English at school and wouldn’t call myself a particularly avid reader. But when Covid hit and all my work dried up, I sat down with a computer each and every day to write the book – even if I only ended up with a couple of paragraphs. Now I know I can do these things, I am able to switch the skills on when I need them.
Is there a message behind Say Goodbye? What do you hope listeners take from it?
There wasn’t meant to be, but when I think about it now and with what’s to come in the next instalment; I guess the messages through the characters would be: don’t give up, what goes around comes around, mental resilience is a skill; hone it, revenge is an important and instinctual emotion and from the music perspective, I just hope people enjoy it.
