Open Water, the indie folk sensation, has released their latest album ‘Above The Waterline’.
Fusing elements of Celtic, jazz, and bluegrass, the trio have created a soundscape of timeless messages. We spoke with the band to discuss the music-making process, favorite tracks, and what’s next for Open Water. It was clear the band was passionate about the creative process behind ‘Above The Waterline’ and it’s no surprise songs like ‘I Trust The Road’ were the most exciting to write.
Jeff, the primary songwriter, crafted the melody and chords which gave Joanne the freedom to paint the beautiful lyrics – making it an inspirational experience for all. To describe Open Water’s sound, the band would point listeners to ‘Waiting For The Daylight’, which contains both Jeff’s counterpoint guitar playing and Richard’s jazzy blues leads.
The lyrical meaning of the song is highly relevant in 2021, and speaks of hope in uncertain times. The vitality of the creative process is something that drives Open Water as a band, and giving themselves a voice as musicians as well as maintaining a healthy outlet for all of their unique influences. Working together during the pandemic to create this album was a challenge, but they were determined to deliver a sound that could allow people to escape and connect with the music in a meaningful way. Open Water plan to keep going with more courses and further albums in the works.
