The Italian singer and composer known as Aria, whose real name is Mariano Schiavolini, released two singles, “The Next Life” and “Lady in White,” on April 22nd. In celebration of Earth Day, Aria decided to release these two pieces of music in an effort to shed light on animal cruelty and environmental injustices that are plaguing our once-lovely planet.
As a humanitarian and avid environmentalist, Aria dedicates much of his time towards improving the living conditions of animals. Aria’s website, which pairs montages of the beauty of nature and wildlife and depictions of the atrocities committed by humans against nature with Aria’s own music, has seen huge success in raising awareness on these sensitive topics.
“The Next Life” opens with a piano intro with a simple drum beat that paves the way for Aria’s lyrics to take center stage. Just when you think you know what you’re going to expect with this song, Aria’s voice cuts out and upcoming Houston rapper R Reed enters the foreground, depicting and describing the horrors happening to our environment. The song does a masterful job of blending a rock ballad with hip hop stylings that produce a powerful message, especially when the song reaches its choruses.
“Lady in White” may not have the same powerful message as “The Next Life,” but the song still is able to tug at the listener’s heart strings. Another rock ballad, but this time without the talented rap stylings of R Reed, “Lady in White” shows the more intimate side of Aria’s songwriting, as compared to the activist side that Aria has demonstrated before. Aria’s lyrics and songwriting again demonstrate how well he can paint an image for the listener that transports them to the exact headspace Aria has in mind.
