Weak13 reimagines Otis Redding’s “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” on their grunge rendition of an old classic, which was released on December 13th. Fronted by Nick J. Townsend, Weak13 adds an interplanetary spin to Redding’s RnB classic that is guaranteed to make even fans of the original version head bang along to this new take.
Weak13’s version of “(Sittin’ On) The Dock of the Bay” leans heavily into science fiction, and nothing screams science fiction more than the music video released alongside the single. Although there was a combination of science fiction and humor in Weak13’s single, there were deeper and more tender roots for this decision.

Opening with a whistle of the original’s melody and the same iconic bass line, the song quickly turns into a grunge anthem that only has slight echoes of the original’s orchestration and arrangement. Townsend’s vocals are essentially the only remembrances of Redding’s song, and even then it is only slightly so. That is not to say that this version is bad by any means, since the song is still very catchy and guaranteed to make any listener jam out along with the group. The most climactic part of the song comes at the end of the track when Townsend takes a guitar solo in place of a whistling solo. The guitar solo combines the best aspects of Weak13’s grunge version with a science fiction sound to it that helps ground the song in its tender roots.
